Hello, and welcome to my practice

I’m Dr David Cunningham, a HCPC-registered and Chartered Counselling Psychologist. I help people experiencing a wide range of difficulties, including anxiety, depression, trauma, PTSD, OCD, addiction, and chronic pain. I also undertake ADHD assessment and diagnosis, and gender identity support.
My approach is grounded in evidence-based practice but always personal and supportive. The focus is on creating a safe, understanding space where we can explore what’s happening for you and find ways forward that feel right.
You can meet with me online, wherever you are in Scotland or beyond, or in person in Inverness and Fife. I aim to make the process as accessible and comfortable as possible.
You’re very welcome to book a free introductory call to see if working together feels like the right next step.

One-to-One Therapy
I offer one-to-one therapy in a safe, confidential, and supportive space where you can take time to explore what matters most to you. Many people come to therapy when they are struggling with anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, or the effects of trauma. Others may be looking for support around PTSD, grief, relationship challenges, ADHD, or questions of identity.
My approach is compassionate, evidence-based, and tailored to you. I often draw on trauma-focused therapies, person-centred approaches, and psychological models that help people make sense of their difficulties and find practical ways forward.
You can meet with me online from anywhere in Scotland or beyond, or in person in comfortable therapy rooms in both Fife and Inverness. Wherever we meet, my goal is to create a calm and welcoming environment where you feel heard, understood, and supported as we work together.

ADHD Assessment, Diagnosis & Support
I provide high-quality ADHD assessments for adults, following NICE guidelines. The ADHD assessment typically spans between 5 and 8 sessions, depending on your history and the areas we need to explore. If a formal diagnosis is required, further sessions and a detailed report are provided, with assessment prices starting around £500. And a complete assessment and diagnosis from £850.
Following the assessment, we work together to develop a personalised plan to help manage your symptoms, tailored to your daily goals.
Please note that accessing ADHD treatment through NHS shared care channels can be challenging, and I do not provide pharmacological treatment. However, I can offer advice and referrals to appropriate specialists if medication is considered.
This approach ensures you understand the process, receive practical support, and feel guided throughout every step.

Gender Identity & Affirmative Care
Exploring gender identity is deeply personal. I provide affirmative psychological assessments and support, working with you in a respectful and nonjudgmental manner. My assessments aim to understand your lived experience, history, and needs.
If needed, I can also conduct gender recognition assessments, producing a formal psychological report to support legal or medical pathways. These follow guidelines informed by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), which sets the international Standards of Care for working ethically and safely with trans and gender-diverse individuals.
In all this work, I focus on what’s meaningful for you, your identity, goals, and wellbeing. My role is not to prescribe medical treatment (I do not offer hormonal or surgical interventions), but I can refer you to appropriate specialists when needed.
Because waiting times in NHS gender identity services (GICs) are often long, many people pursue private assessments in the meantime. I aim to provide clarity, support, and evidence-based guidance on next steps, whether personal, social, legal or medical.

Training & Consultation
I offer tailored training and consultation to organisations, schools, and third-sector services, drawing on the psychology of teams, collaboration, and resilience. The focus is on strengthening communication, improving staff wellbeing, and enhancing productivity through evidence-based psychological insights.
For leaders, these sessions provide clear strategies to support staff, build cohesion, and foster healthier workplace cultures. By focusing on wellbeing and inclusion, organisations not only reduce stress and burnout but also see improvements in morale, trust, and downtime.
All services are fully tailored to individual requirements, ensuring the training is relevant and practical for your setting. This can include increasing awareness of neurodivergence (such as ADHD and autism), building understanding of gender identity and transgender experiences, and applying frameworks like minority stress theory to promote inclusion and equality.
The result is a stronger, more cohesive workforce where both individuals and organisations can thrive.

Practical Details & Costs
Sessions last 50 minutes and cost £110. Payment is made in advance by bank transfer. Reduced fees may be available in some circumstances. My goal is to simplify the process, allowing you to focus on the work itself.

Appointments & Access
Appointments are available online via secure video, supporting people across Scotland and beyond, or in person in Inverness and Fife. Many clients begin with a complimentary introductory call to explore whether the approach and sessions are the right fit for them.

Take the First Step
Starting therapy or an assessment can feel daunting, but you don’t have to do it alone. The introductory call is an opportunity to ask questions, feel at ease with the process, and take the first step toward clarity, understanding, and meaningful change.
